AI-Penned Tales Outscore Humans in Reader Ratings, Study Finds

A recent study has revealed that people often prefer stories written by artificial intelligence over those written by humans, even when they believe the stories were created by real people. The research was led by scientists at Villanova University in the United States and published by Cambridge University Press. The team wanted to find out if people could tell the difference between short stories written by published authors and those generated by ChatGPT, a popular AI tool. They selected three stories from real authors and three stories created by ChatGPT, then asked people between the ages of 18 and 81 to read and rate them.

In the first part of the study, 1,682 participants read a story and were told either correctly or incorrectly whether it was written by a human or by AI. After reading, they rated how interesting and high-quality the story was. In later experiments, smaller groups of people read one human-written story and one AI-written story without being told who wrote them. They were then asked to guess which was which. The results showed that most people could not tell the difference between human and AI stories. Surprisingly, the stories that people thought were written by humans but were actually written by AI received the highest ratings. This suggests that people may have a bias toward stories they believe are written by humans, even if they are not.

Dr. Deena Weisberg, a senior author of the study, explained that many people assume creative writing requires special human qualities, like understanding emotions and having life experiences. However, the study found that AI can write stories that people enjoy just as much, or even more, than those written by humans. The research also showed that people who said they knew more about AI were better at identifying AI-written stories, but those who claimed to be experts in literature were not. Participants also rated AI-generated stories as higher quality, possibly because AI writing tends to be clearer and more direct, while human writing can be more complex and subtle. This study highlights how AI is changing the way we think about creativity and storytelling.
