Def Leppard's Vivian Campbell: Rocking Through Troubles and Triumphs

Vivian Campbell is a guitarist for the famous rock band Def Leppard, but before joining them, he played in a group called Sweet Savage in Northern Ireland during the late 1970s. At that time, Northern Ireland was going through a period known as the Troubles, which caused a lot of tension and conflict between people of different religious backgrounds. Vivian remembers that when his band performed in certain areas, they had to be careful. Sometimes, two members would stay quiet on stage to avoid drawing attention to their backgrounds. Despite the tension, Vivian said that music was their way to escape from the problems happening in society.

He explained that when they played together, they didn't think about politics or the Troubles. Music helped them forget about the outside world and focus on what they loved. Vivian believes that music can unite people, even when there are big differences between them. He said that in today's world, which can feel divided, music is even more important because it brings people together and helps them feel happier. He joked that the world needs more love, more music, and more pizza.

Vivian is originally from Lisburn, County Antrim, and he joined Def Leppard in the early 1990s. The band is famous for songs like 'Animal,' 'Pour Some Sugar On Me,' and 'Let's Get Rocked. ' Vivian tries to visit Northern Ireland at least once a year, and he feels privileged to play with Def Leppard at the Belsonic music festival next summer. He also hopes to spend some time relaxing in County Donegal. Vivian recently overcame serious health problems and is now in remission, feeling strong and grateful for his recovery. He said he feels like the luckiest man in the world and is excited to perform with his band and reconnect with his roots.
