Sheila Fell's Stunning Landscapes Back on Display After 65 Years!
After more than six decades out of the public eye, a cherished painting by the renowned Cumbrian artist Sheila Fell has returned to public display. The artwork, titled Pathway to a Farm, was painted in 1959 and had been privately owned since 1961. For 65 years, it hung in a home in Cockermouth, not far from where it was created. Recently, the Castlegate House Gallery in Cockermouth acquired the painting, making it possible for everyone to see it once again. Steve Swallow, an art expert at the gallery, expressed his excitement about the acquisition. He described Pathway to a Farm as one of the best works by Sheila Fell and the most significant painting by her that the gallery has handled in the past 15 years.
Sheila Fell was born in Aspatria in 1931 and became famous for her powerful landscape paintings of Cumbria. She was discovered and mentored by LS Lowry, another well-known artist who also spent time in Cumbria. Pathway to a Farm is a beautiful painting that shows a rural scene with a horse and carriage in front of a farm gate. The path leads to a group of buildings, and in the background, there are snow-covered mountains. The painting is framed in a simple wooden frame and now hangs on the gallery wall for everyone to enjoy. Sheila Fell passed away in 1979, but her art continues to be celebrated for its honest and moving depictions of rural and industrial life in northern England.
In addition to Pathway to a Farm, the gallery has also acquired another painting by Sheila Fell called Haystacks in Winter. This painting was created in 1961 and had been in private hands in Cambridge until now. Haystacks in Winter shows a snowy landscape along the Solway Plain, with small huts scattered across the flat land and a dramatic sky above. The painting is said to show the influence of JMW Turner, especially in the way the light is painted in the sky. Steve Swallow commented that Haystacks in Winter clearly demonstrates Fell's admiration for Turner and the impact he had on her work. He also praised Sheila Fell for her ability to make a winter scene feel warm and inviting, which is not easy to do. Now, both paintings are on display at the Castlegate House Gallery, allowing the public to appreciate Sheila Fell's talent and her unique view of the Cumbrian landscape. The gallery hopes that these paintings will inspire more people to learn about Sheila Fell and the history of art in Cumbria.
