'Afroworld' exhibition to celebrate black hair

An exciting new exhibition titled Hair: Identity in the Afroworld is set to open at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull. This exhibition celebrates the beauty and cultural importance of black hair through a series of portraits taken by local photographer Rayh Mohammed. What makes this exhibition unique is the use of augmented reality technology, which allows visitors to interact with the portraits and hear personal stories from the people featured about what their hair means to them. The exhibition will open on Friday and will be available for visitors until August 17.

Volunteers from across Hull have played a key role in bringing this exhibition to life by sharing their own experiences and relationships with their hair. Shemel Fanfair, one of the organizers, explained that the exhibition is a celebration of afro hair's beauty and cultural significance. Visitors will also have the chance to learn about traditional braiding styles and hair care techniques that have been passed down through generations, highlighting the rich heritage behind these practices.

Stephanie Edwards, a curator at the Ferens Art Gallery, emphasized that the exhibition is designed for everyone, whether or not they have afro hair. She pointed out that the event also aims to address the historic lack of representation of black hair and culture within the gallery's collection. By showcasing these powerful stories and images, the exhibition hopes to educate and inspire visitors while celebrating diversity and identity.
