Wordsworth's Mountain Muse Aims to Draw Global Tourists to Lake District

William Wordsworth is a famous poet who wrote about the beautiful landscapes of Cumbria, England, more than two centuries ago. His poems are still loved by many people, and the places he described continue to attract visitors from all over the world. Wordsworth Grasmere, a museum dedicated to his life and work, has decided to share one of its most treasured manuscripts with museums in Asia. The hope is that people who see the manuscript will be inspired to visit the Lake District and experience the scenery that Wordsworth wrote about.

The manuscript on display is a poem Wordsworth wrote in 1840 while climbing Helvellyn, the third highest mountain in England. After writing the poem, he sent a copy to his friend, the artist Benjamin Robert Haydon. Haydon was so moved by the poem that he painted a portrait of Wordsworth standing on top of Helvellyn. The painting is dramatic, with dark colors and Wordsworth in a long black coat, his white hair standing out against the mountain background. Both the manuscript and the painting have been shown at the Busan Museum in South Korea and will soon be displayed at the Shanghai Museum East in China.

Michael McGregor, who works at Wordsworth Grasmere, says that South Korea and China are important places for attracting tourists. He believes that as more people from overseas start traveling again, it is important for them to know about Cumbria and Grasmere. The exhibition in Asia is part of a larger show organized by the National Portrait Gallery, which features other famous British writers like William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and J. R. R. Tolkien. McGregor hopes that after seeing Wordsworth's work in these museums, visitors will want to come to Grasmere and Dove Cottage, where Wordsworth lived and wrote many of his most famous poems. Both his birthplace in Cockermouth and Dove Cottage are now museums. Wordsworth also wrote a guidebook about the Lake District, offering practical advice and poetic reflections on the area's beauty. By sharing Wordsworth's work with people around the world, the museum hopes to encourage more tourists to visit Cumbria and discover the inspiration behind his poetry.
