Protests in China over viral school bullying case
In Jiangyou, a city in Sichuan province, China, a serious case of school bullying has caused a lot of anger and protests. A 14-year-old girl was attacked by three other girls, aged 13, 14, and 15. The bullies slapped, kicked, and forced her to kneel. The whole incident was filmed and the video quickly spread on Chinese social media. Many people were shocked and upset by what they saw. They felt that the punishment given to the bullies was too light. Two of the girls were sent to special schools for corrective education, but people wanted stronger action.
The victim's mother, who is deaf, begged the authorities to do more for her daughter. In the video, the girl being bullied said she would call the police, but the bullies did not seem worried. One of them even said she had been to the police station more than ten times and was always released quickly. This made many people feel that the system does not do enough to stop bullying or protect victims.
As the news spread, more than 1,000 people gathered outside the local government office to protest. The protest lasted until after midnight. Some shop owners said the situation became violent when police used batons and electric prods to control the crowd. Videos online showed police dragging protesters and hitting them. Some people threw water bottles at the police. The protesters said they just wanted justice for the bullied girl and were upset that the punishment was not strong enough.
The police later made a statement to stop rumors that the bullies were the children of powerful people. They said the parents of the bullies were either unemployed, working outside the province, or had normal jobs like salesperson or delivery driver. The police also punished two people for spreading false information online.
Bullying in schools has become a very sensitive issue in China. In the past, there have been other cases where students were badly hurt or even died because of bullying. These cases have led to protests and calls for stronger laws. Some lawyers say that the current laws do not protect victims enough and that the punishments for bullies are too mild. Many people in China are now asking for better protection for students and stronger action against bullying.
