Bright Buoys Guard Rare Seahorse Homes in Looe Bay's Seagrass Haven

In the South West of England, a new project is working to protect seagrass meadows and the creatures that depend on them. The Looe Harbour Commissioners and the Ocean Conservation Trust have teamed up to install special marker buoys in Looe Bay. These yellow buoys are easy to spot and have labels that say 'blue meadows' and 'seagrass habitat. ' Their main purpose is to show boaters where they should not anchor their boats. Anchoring in these areas can damage the seagrass, which is a vital part of the marine environment.

Seagrass is not just a plant; it is a home for many sea animals, including the rare long snouted seahorse. This seahorse is small, dark, and has light brown spines. Its numbers have dropped because so much seagrass has been destroyed. Seagrass meadows are also important because they can store large amounts of carbon, which helps fight climate change. They also help keep coastlines from washing away. Sadly, about 40% of the UK's seagrass has disappeared since the 1940s. The main reasons are pollution, boats dropping anchors, fishing with heavy nets, and building along the coast.

To help protect the seagrass, the team has also installed three Advanced Mooring Systems. These systems are different from regular anchors. They use floats to keep the chains above the seagrass, so the plants are not harmed. This is part of the Ocean Conservation Trust's Blue Meadows programme, which aims to protect seagrass all along the south coast. Eden Stevens from the trust says the habitat is 'remarkable' and needs to be saved. Dave Bond from the Looe Harbour Commissioners agrees, saying that protecting seagrass is essential for the long-term health of the sea. The project encourages everyone who uses the water to avoid anchoring in these marked areas and to learn more about why seagrass is so important for the environment and for the animals that live there.
