Joe Lycett's Quirky Costumes Take Center Stage at Birmingham Museum!

Joe Lycett, a well-known comedian from Birmingham, has donated several of his unique costumes to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. These costumes are now part of the museum's permanent collection, which means they will be kept and displayed for people to see for many years. One of the most famous pieces is a gown inspired by Queen Elizabeth I, which Joe wore to the BAFTAs in 2024. Joe said that, like people have done for thousands of years, he expresses himself through the clothes he wears. He is very happy that some of the funny and unusual outfits he has worn over the years will now be kept with other historic clothes in the museum.

Besides the Queen Elizabeth I-style gown, Joe has also donated a suit covered in colorful soft toys, a pair of jeans decorated with floral embroidery, and an England football kit. All of these costumes were created for Joe by his stylist, Krishan Parmar. Joe mentioned that he was honored to visit the museum's costume archive a few months ago and was amazed by the history and beauty of the clothes he saw there. He feels proud that his own costumes will now be part of this special collection.

The costumes will be on display at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery until the end of May. After that, they will remain as part of the city's permanent collection. Rebecca Unsworth, who is the curator of decorative art at Birmingham Museums Trust, said that Joe is known for his colorful and playful style, and they are delighted to have his garments in the collection. One of Joe's costumes will also be featured in the 'I photograph comedians! ' exhibition until May 31. In addition, Joe Lycett's first major solo art exhibition will open at the museum in July. The museum encourages people to visit and see Joe's creative costumes, which show both his personality and the city's rich history.
