Statins: The Surprisingly Safe Heart Helpers You Can Trust
Statins are a type of medicine that millions of people in the UK take to lower their cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance in the blood, and having too much of it can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Statins work by lowering the amount of bad cholesterol, called LDL cholesterol, in your body. Many people have heard that statins can cause a lot of side effects, like memory loss, depression, trouble sleeping, weight gain, and other problems. Because of these worries, some people are afraid to take statins, even though they can help prevent serious heart problems.
A major new review led by scientists at Oxford University has found that statins are actually much safer than many people think. The researchers looked at data from more than 120,000 people who took part in clinical trials. In these trials, some people took statins and others took a placebo, which is a fake pill. The people in the trials did not know which pill they were taking. The study found that most of the side effects listed in the information leaflets that come with statins are not actually caused by the medicine. In fact, only four side effects out of 66 were found to be linked to statins, and these only happened in a small number of people. The side effects were minor changes in liver tests, some swelling in the ankles, and changes in urine. There was no increase in serious liver diseases like hepatitis or liver failure.
The researchers say that the leaflets in statin packs should be updated to reflect these new findings. Right now, the leaflets list many possible side effects that are not really caused by statins, which can scare people away from taking a medicine that could save their lives. Professor Christina Reith, the lead author of the study, said that worries about side effects have stopped many people from taking statins, even though the benefits are much greater than the risks. Professor Rory Collins, another author, said that the information about statins needs to be changed quickly so that patients and doctors can make better decisions. Experts from the British Heart Foundation agree and say that many people are missing out on the benefits of statins because of stories about side effects that are not true. They say that statins save lives, and if you have any problems with your medicine, you should talk to your doctor.
