Meet The NaNaz: Punk Rock Queens Shaking Up The Scene After 50!
The NaNaz is a six-member punk band from Wales that is changing how people think about punk music. The group was formed last year after a workshop in Newport that encouraged women over 50 to try playing punk. The band members are Anne-Marie Bollen, Deb de Lloyd, Claire Symons, Ange Pearce, Marega Palser, and Jade Ball. They dress in punk outfits and play their instruments with energy and excitement. When they perform, they attract crowds of all ages, and people love to take photos and videos of their shows. Behind them on stage, they display a Welsh flag and a 'Loud Women' flag with a big red lips logo.
Since forming, The NaNaz have quickly become one of the most talked-about new bands in the British punk scene. Their debut single, '60 Lies,' came out in August 2025, and they have played in cities like Bristol, Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Aberdare, and Chippenham. In April, they released their first EP, 'Nanafesto. ' Many people compare them to the Riot Women, a fictional band from a BBC drama about menopausal women who start a punk group. The NaNaz write songs about real-life experiences, from small annoyances like noisy bus rides to bigger issues like social care and aging. Anne-Marie Bollen, the lead singer, says being in the band has given her new energy. She wrote a song called 'Carehome Robbery' inspired by her work as a nurse and her mother's experience in a care home.
Recently, The NaNaz traveled to New York City for their first international performance at the Loud Women Festival. They played eight original songs at a music shop in Williamsburg, and Anne-Marie described the experience as a dream come true. The band enjoys connecting with younger fans and encourages them to start their own bands. They believe music is a great way to express feelings and bring people together. Cassie Fox, the founder of Loud Women, says The NaNaz are inspiring and show that women can rock at any age. The band will soon appear on a BBC show, and they hope to keep making music and inspiring others to follow their dreams, no matter how old they are.
