Tesla and several other car companies are recalling millions of vehicles in China because of concerns about hidden door handles. These handles, which are flush with the car and often powered by electronics, have become popular because they make cars look sleek and help them move more efficiently. However, after some serious accidents, people are worried that these handles can be hard to use in emergencies, especially if the car loses power. China has now announced its biggest ever car recall, affecting more than four million vehicles, including nearly three million Teslas.

The main problem is that these hidden handles can be difficult to find and use, especially if you are not familiar with the car. In some accidents, people were trapped inside because the electronic handles stopped working after a crash. For example, Xiaomi, a Chinese carmaker, faced criticism after two deadly crashes involving its SU7 model. In one case, three people died because the doors could not be opened after the car crashed. Xiaomi said their cars have emergency handles that work without power, but the accidents raised questions about whether these handles are easy enough to find and use.

China is now leading the way in making new rules for car safety. Starting in 2027, all new cars sold in China must have mechanical door releases on both the inside and outside. There must also be clear signs inside the car showing how to open the doors. Tesla, Xiaomi, XPeng, and Geely are all recalling cars to add warning labels and, in some cases, update the software so the windows will lower in a crash. Some experts say these changes are not enough and that cars should always have a simple, mechanical way to open the doors. Other countries, like the US and those in Europe, are also looking at these issues and may make similar rules. The main goal is to make sure everyone can get out of a car safely, even if the electronics fail.
