Chinese Shandong carrier strike group heads to South China Sea after week of drills near Japan
A Chinese carrier strike group, led by the Shandong aircraft carrier, has embarked towards the South China Sea. This move comes after a week-long drill in the vicinity of Japan's waters, as reported by the Japanese Defence Ministry. The group comprises at least 10 Chinese warships.
The Shandong was observed conducting ship-borne aircraft operations in the Pacific, south of Japan's Miyako Island and east of the Philippines' Luzon Island. This activity spanned a week from October 28. The Shandong executed 570 ship-based aircraft take-offs and landings, with the majority involving J-15 fighter jets. Helicopters were also part of the week-long exercise.
At the nearest point, the ships were approximately 430km (267 miles) from Miyako Island. Following the exercise, the carrier group navigated west into the Bashi Channel, located between Luzon and Taiwan, setting course for the South China Sea on Monday.
