AI job application rise 'risks hiring incapable staff'

The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in job applications is raising concerns about the quality of candidates being hired, according to James Robinson, an advertising executive. Robinson, who operates Hello Starling, an advertising agency based in Cardiff, has observed a significant trend where job applicants are increasingly relying on generative AI chatbots to assist them in their applications. He cautioned that while some candidates may excel at utilizing this technology, it does not necessarily mean they possess the skills required for the job. Megan Cooper, a careers adviser, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that AI can be a valuable resource for job seekers but should never replace the essential human judgment in the hiring process. A recent survey conducted in the UK revealed that nearly half of the respondents had employed AI to aid them in their job applications, highlighting the growing acceptance of AI as a tool for job hunters. Robinson noted that many applications he receives are filled with phrases that appear to be generated by AI. He pointed out that certain expressions, such as 'leveraging their skillset' and 'my skills align with your organisation's objectives and goals,' have become commonplace. This trend makes it increasingly challenging for employers to distinguish between genuine candidates and those who rely heavily on AI. Robinson even consulted the AI chatbot ChatGPT, which confirmed that these phrases are likely to be produced by its algorithms. This situation has left him feeling uncertain about the authenticity of the applicants he encounters. Sharing his experiences on LinkedIn, Robinson expressed surprise at the number of fellow business leaders who share his concerns. Many of them are grappling with the same issue of differentiating between real applicants and those utilizing AI. He remarked, 'I think it is a real challenge in itself, but I don't think that I'm alone. ' Despite these challenges, Robinson believes that AI can be beneficial when used appropriately. He noted that AI can help applicants present their qualifications more clearly and succinctly. AI, or artificial intelligence, refers to computer systems that can learn and solve problems in ways that mimic human behavior. While computers lack the ability to think or feel like humans, scientists have developed systems capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. Generative AI, in particular, is designed to create new content that resembles human-made material by learning from vast amounts of existing data, including text and images available online. At Cardiff Metropolitan University, careers adviser Megan Cooper is working to guide students through the ethical considerations of using AI in their job applications. She stated, 'AI can be used as a tool. It can be used as an aid. It's something that can complement, but absolutely not replace, human judgement. ' Cooper explained that many students feel compelled to demonstrate their understanding of generative AI and its applications, as employers increasingly expect candidates to be proficient in its use. They are concerned about being perceived as cheating or making mistakes. The university encourages students to recognize when it is appropriate to utilize AI, such as during the research phase of the application process or when seeking feedback on their CVs. They can also use AI to refine cover letters they have already drafted. Ultimately, Cooper emphasized that the job interview process should allow applicants to showcase their unique qualities and strengths.
