Why future of 'homeless' brass band is so important

Foden's Band, a renowned brass band that has been a part of the Sandbach community since 1902, is facing a significant challenge that could affect its future. The band, known for its striking red jackets and bow ties, has achieved remarkable success over the years, winning numerous national and international championships. However, the band members recently learned that they would have to vacate their rehearsal space in February, which poses a serious threat to their preparations for the upcoming European championships in May. Band manager Mark Wilkinson expressed the band's predicament, stating that they have become 'more or less homeless' and are reaching out to the community for assistance in finding a new place to practice. He remains hopeful that the band will continue to thrive for many more years to come. The history of Foden's Band is rich and fascinating. It all began in the early 1900s when two local bands, the Sandbach Volunteer Band and the Wheelock Temperance Society Band, existed in the area. In May 1900, both bands refused to march to the suburb of Elworth during a celebration, leading to the formation of the Elworth Silver Band by disgruntled locals. Unfortunately, this new band faced its own challenges and disbanded in 1902 due to a disagreement over a performance for the coronation of King Edward VII. Edwin Foden, a local truck manufacturer, attempted to purchase the band's instruments, but his offer was rejected. After the Elworth Silver Band disbanded, Mr. Foden stepped in to provide new instruments for the musicians, marking the beginning of Foden's Motor Works Band. Over the years, Foden's Band has established itself as a powerhouse in the brass band world. It has consistently ranked at the top and has won the British Open Brass Band Championships 13 times, with their most recent victory occurring in 2023. Additionally, they have claimed the National Championships of Great Britain 16 times, achieving an impressive hat-trick on two occasions. The band also holds the record for the most area contest wins in the northwest region, with 26 titles to their name. Foden's Band has had the honor of performing by Royal Command on four occasions, including for King George V and Queen Elizabeth II. Mark Wilkinson, who has dedicated 32 years to the band, proudly stated that they have won every major title during his time. The musicians have also traveled internationally, showcasing their talent at prestigious brass band championships in America and Switzerland. In 2016, Foden's Band relocated to Bradwall Village Hall after their previous venue was destroyed by a fire. However, the recent announcement that they must vacate their current rehearsal space in February 2025 has left the band in a difficult position. This decision comes at a crucial time, as they need to prepare for the European Championships in Norway. Despite receiving offers from other bands to share their spaces, Mark Wilkinson emphasized the band's desire to remain in Sandbach, stating, 'This is where our roots are so we want to stay in Sandbach. We don't want to move out. ' The band is actively seeking suggestions from the community for a new practice location, hoping to continue their legacy in the town they call home.
