Hong Kong Mourns as Fire Deaths Climb to 146 in Tragic Tower Blaze

A tragic fire broke out in Hong Kong at the Wang Fuk Court housing complex in the Tai Po district, causing the deaths of at least 146 people. The fire started on Wednesday and quickly spread through seven of the eight high-rise towers in the complex. Police have warned that the number of deaths could still rise, as 150 people are still missing and 79 others were injured. The fire is believed to have spread rapidly because of flammable materials used in the construction, such as plastic netting and bamboo scaffolding. The fire department found that the alarms in all eight buildings were not working properly, which may have made it harder for residents to escape. The police have arrested several people, including company directors and construction workers, on suspicion of corruption and manslaughter related to the building renovations. Wang Fuk Court was built in 1983 and housed nearly 4,600 people, with a large number of elderly residents.
