Isle of Wight Rocks: Local Bands Shine on National Radio Spotlight

The Isle of Wight's music scene recently received national attention when BBC presenters Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq hosted a live broadcast from Strings Bar & Venue in Newport. This special event was part of Independent Venue Week, a celebration of small music venues across the country. Strings, which opened in 2017 and can hold up to 300 people, is the only dedicated music venue on the island. Its co-founders, Andy Booth and Claydon Connor, were thrilled to welcome the BBC team and local bands like Coach Party and The Pill for the show. Andy described the experience as 'pretty crazy' and said it was amazing for both the venue and the Isle of Wight. Claydon explained that Strings has quickly become a key part of the local community, and he highlighted the island's rich music history, mentioning famous artists like Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan who have performed there in the past.

The live radio show featured a performance by Coach Party, a four-member band from the island. They played a live session on BBC 6 Music, and the presenters also played tracks from other local artists such as The Bees, Panda Swim, Plastic Mermaids, and Wet Leg. Huw Stephens kicked off the show with an announcement on a Wightlink ferry, setting the tone for a day focused on local talent. Steve Lamacq called the Isle of Wight's music scene a 'success story that breeds success,' suggesting that the achievements of one band can inspire others. The presenters emphasized the importance of supporting local venues like Strings, warning that if people don't use and celebrate these spaces, they could disappear.

As part of their visit, the presenters stopped by Triple A Records, a local record shop. Co-owner Andy Barding told them that local artists are some of his best sellers, and he gave them a tour of a small museum dedicated to the island's musical history. Rob Da Bank, who organized the Bestival music festival on the island for many years, said he was 'blown away' by the BBC's visit and described it as a dream come true. He also runs a music club for young people and wants them to feel included in the island's music scene. The radio show included interviews with students from Platform One, the island's creative arts college, and highlighted the strong sense of community and creativity that makes the Isle of Wight's music scene so special.
