Meet Bobbi: The AI Chatbot Easing Police Non-Emergency Calls!

A police force in the North West of England has introduced a new digital assistant called Bobbi to help with non-emergency calls. Bobbi is an AI-powered chatbot that people can use on the Merseyside Police website. The main goal of Bobbi is to answer questions and help with problems that are not urgent, so that police officers can focus on more serious cases. According to Superintendent Tony Fairhurst, about 20 percent of the calls the police receive every day do not need a police officer to handle them. By using Bobbi, the police hope to save time and make their work more efficient.

When someone visits the police website and starts a chat with Bobbi, the chatbot will first ask if the situation is an emergency. If it is, Bobbi will tell the person to call 999 right away. If it is not an emergency, Bobbi will ask for the person's name, email address, and phone number. Then, the person can describe their problem, and Bobbi will try to help or connect them to the right service. The police say that Bobbi is not meant to replace the 101 non-emergency phone line, but to give people another option if they prefer using digital services.

Superintendent Fairhurst explained that Bobbi is safe to use and that the information people share with the chatbot is protected just like other police systems. People do not have to give their information if they do not want to. Bobbi is also designed to recognize if a situation becomes more serious and will tell the person to call 999 if needed. The chatbot can even detect if someone is upset or in distress, and it can pass the conversation to a human operator if necessary. Bobbi is also being trained to understand different languages and spelling mistakes, making it easier for more people to use. The police hope that Bobbi will help people get answers faster and allow officers to focus on emergencies and important cases.
