Dolly Parton, the well-known country singer, has made a huge impact on children’s reading habits through her Imagination Library program. Growing up in a family where reading was not a regular activity, Dolly wanted to make sure that other children had the chance to enjoy books from a young age. She started the Imagination Library in Tennessee in 1995, and it expanded to the United Kingdom in 2007. The program sends a free book every month to children from birth until they turn five years old. This simple idea has helped millions of children around the world develop a love for reading.

Foster carers in the UK have shared how much the Imagination Library has helped the children in their care. Barbara Hubbard, a foster carer from Berwick, Northumberland, has been looking after children for more than ten years. She describes the program as 'just amazing. ' Whenever she has a child under five, a new book arrives in the mail each month for that child. These books are not just for reading—they are for the children to keep and treasure. Barbara says that many of the children she cares for have speech difficulties, but reading together has helped them improve their language skills. She also mentions that the books have helped her form closer bonds with the children. For example, a little girl with special needs is now able to read at her age level because she has grown up surrounded by books.

The Imagination Library has given away more than 300 million books in countries like the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Ireland. In the UK alone, over seven million books have been donated. Sarah Roscoe-Campbell, the principal of the Westmorland and Furness Virtual School in Cumbria, recently started distributing the books to children in her area. She says it is amazing that someone as famous as Dolly Parton, who is from Tennessee in the USA, can have such a positive effect on children in Cumbria. Foster carers have given a lot of positive feedback, saying that receiving the books helps them build stronger relationships with the children. Angela Morrison, another foster carer, always takes books with her when she goes out. She has noticed that many children leave her care with much better speech skills, and she believes that reading the books has played a big part in this. In Northumberland, the county council makes sure that all eligible foster carers automatically receive the books. Social worker Leigh Finlay says that the books have been 'transformational' for some children in care. Many children who come into foster care have never had the experience of sitting down with a book, but now they can take their books with them when they move on to adoption or return to their families.
