Why Nerds Are the Ultimate Cool Kids: Warhammer and Beyond!
The Beachhead Tabletop Games Expo 2026 took place at the Bournemouth International Centre in Dorset, drawing more than 3,500 fans of tabletop gaming. The event, now in its tenth year, filled the large hall with stalls, players, and a wide variety of games and accessories. People of all ages came together to enjoy their shared love of games like Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons. The expo challenged the stereotype that tabletop gaming is only for introverts, showing instead a lively and welcoming community.
Peter Valinski, the event organizer, described the expo as a 'safe space' for gamers. He explained that many people who enjoy tabletop games can be socially awkward, but at the expo, they find others who share their interests. Peter said, 'I'm always amazed at how nice everybody in this community is. They want to bring in new people and encourage them to get involved. ' He emphasized that the community is open and friendly, which is not always the case in other hobbies.
Walking through the expo, visitors could see hundreds of miniatures, artworks, and accessories for sale. The popularity of tabletop gaming has grown in recent years, helped by TV shows like Stranger Things and The Big Bang Theory, as well as celebrities like Henry Cavill who openly enjoy these hobbies. Angie Taylor, who runs a small business called Fey Portal, said that the community is becoming more diverse. Her stall, filled with pastel-colored dice and accessories, stood out among the more traditional merchandise. Angie said, 'More and more women, girls and femme people are getting into it. They're realizing it's a more inclusive space than they thought - and they are welcome. ' She believes that seeing different kinds of products helps everyone feel included.
For many people at the expo, nostalgia played a big role. Alex Nicholson, a collector of Warhammer 40,000 miniatures from the 1990s, said that playing the game brings back memories of his childhood. 'We're able to have the army we always wanted as teenagers - it's living out a dream we weren't able to do back in the 90s,' he explained. Some collections can be worth thousands of pounds, but Alex joked that he wouldn't say exactly how much his was worth in case his wife found out.
The expo also highlighted the positive effects of tabletop gaming. Liam Dempsey, a local ambassador for Models for Heroes, works with veterans and emergency workers, introducing them to miniature painting and gaming. He said that painting miniatures helps people relax and open up about their feelings. 'If you sit and try to talk to them, normally they'll close up quite a lot. But if you have them with a paintbrush in hand, they find it much easier to open up and talk about things,' Liam explained. He finds painting models to be a great way to take a break from life's stresses.
As the expo ended, it was clear that the tabletop gaming community is about more than just games. People put a lot of time and effort into their hobbies and into building a supportive community. As Alex Nicholson said, 'The thing is, being a nerd has secretly always been cool! ' The event showed that anyone can find a place in the world of tabletop gaming, no matter who they are.
