Jersey police using AI to fight crime, says report

Jersey Police have been recognized for their efforts in using technology to fight crime more effectively. In March, the police announced they were testing AI to help them in their work. AI is a computer system that can analyze information and help make decisions, but the police made it clear that humans are still in charge and oversee all the processes to ensure everything is done properly.

The report also highlighted some growing challenges for the police. There has been an increase in incidents involving missing young people and youth crime on the island, which has cost about £1. 8 million in 2024. Police Chief Robin Smith explained that collecting and analyzing data, a process known as digital forensics, is becoming more difficult because of the rising amount of information and the costs involved. He said that the complexity of cases and the large volume of data require a lot of resources and expertise, and the police are always working to improve their skills and tools.

In 2024, there were 741 reports of missing persons, and almost all of them were young people. This shows that the police need to keep focusing on helping young people and finding those who go missing. The report also found that there were more than 1,000 speeding incidents on the island, 54 serious injury road crashes, and 675 crashes where no one was hurt. Vehicle crime increased by 28 percent.
