TSMC Hints at Chip Price Hikes Amid Soaring Costs and AI Boom

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, is the largest chipmaker in the world. The company is based in Taiwan and makes advanced computer chips for famous companies like Apple, Nvidia, and AMD. These chips are used in many electronic devices, including smartphones, laptops, and computers that run artificial intelligence. Recently, the BBC visited TSMC's headquarters in Taiwan to talk with the company's chief financial officer, Wendell Huang, about the challenges the company is facing and what the future might look like.

One of the main issues TSMC is dealing with is rising costs. Inflation is making it more expensive for TSMC to do business. This means the prices of materials, energy, and other things needed to make chips are going up. When costs go up, companies sometimes have to raise their prices. Wendell Huang did not say for sure if TSMC will increase their prices, but he did not rule it out either. He said that TSMC will not suddenly make prices much higher, but they do want to show the value of their technology and the quality of their manufacturing. The company is known for being a leader in technology and for making very reliable chips.

TSMC is also expanding its factories to other countries, including the United States, Germany, and Japan. Some people think this is because of political pressure from the US and China, but TSMC says they are building new factories because their customers want them to. The company says that the most advanced chips will still be made in Taiwan, and moving all the technology to the US would take many years.
