Switch and Keep Your Number Sooner: Mobile Porting Speeds Up in Channel Islands!

People living in the Channel Islands will soon be able to keep their mobile phone numbers when they switch to a different mobile provider, and this change is happening sooner than expected. The regulators in Jersey and Guernsey have announced that Jersey Telecom, also known as JT, will make it possible for Coop Mobile customers to keep their numbers by 17 March. This is six weeks earlier than the original plan. The decision was made after JT, Coop Mobile, and Sure, the company that provides the network for Coop Mobile, reached an agreement with the regulators.

In the past, customers who used Coop Mobile and wanted to switch from Jersey Telecom could not keep their old phone numbers. This process, called number porting, was not available to them. The Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authority and the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority said that all mobile providers must allow customers to keep their numbers, even if there are business agreements between the companies. The regulators believe that this rule is important because it gives people more freedom to choose the mobile provider that works best for them.

Michael Byrne, the head of the Guernsey regulator, and Tim Ringsdore, his counterpart in Jersey, said that letting people keep their numbers is a key part of making sure there is fair competition in the Channel Islands' mobile phone market. They explained that the earlier date means JT customers will have more choices sooner than they thought. This change is expected to make it easier for people to switch providers without worrying about losing their phone numbers. The regulators hope that this will encourage mobile companies to improve their services and offer better deals to customers. People in the Channel Islands can now look forward to more flexibility and better options when it comes to their mobile phones.
