Sunderland's Music City Sparks a Vibrant Sound Revolution!

Sunderland, a city in the North East of England, has experienced a big boost in its music scene after joining the Music Cities Network last year. This network connects cities around the world that are passionate about music, including places like Berlin, Sydney, and Manchester. Since Sunderland became a member, there has been a noticeable increase in live music events and more people attending gigs. The Fire Station, a popular venue in the city center, hosted 220 events and sold about 90,000 tickets in the past year, which is a 40 percent increase from before. This growth has made people in Sunderland feel more positive and proud of their local music.

The Music Cities Network has helped Sunderland by giving it access to new opportunities and resources. Famous artists like Emeli Sandé and Franz Ferdinand performed at The Fire Station, helping to launch Sunderland’s first Year of Music. Local musician Tom A. Smith also played there, joined by Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, who returned to his hometown for the event. These performances have brought excitement and attention to Sunderland’s music scene. Rhys McKinnell, the CEO of Culture Quarter, said that being a Music City has helped connect different parts of the music industry in Sunderland, such as artists, studios, and venues. Sunderland will soon host Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and the city hopes to attract even more major music events in the future.
