Village Bus Shelter Transformed into Colorful Community Art Spot

In the village of Landulph in Cornwall, a bus shelter has been transformed into a work of art to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. The shelter was damaged when a vehicle crashed into it, so the Landulph Parish Council decided to commission an artist to give it a new look. Gill Mannings Cox, an artist from nearby Cargreen, was chosen for the job. She spent three months painting the shelter, earning £700 for her efforts. Her design features scenes from the local countryside and portraits of people from the community. The outside walls of the shelter show images of winter and autumn, while the inside is decorated with spring and summer themes, including apple-pickers and cider-making.

The project was a community effort, with local residents invited to suggest ideas for the shelter’s new look. Parish councillor Claire Tagg said she was delighted with the result. She enjoys sitting in the shelter and discovering new details in the artwork, such as birds and boats. One local resident, Ron Norris, was surprised and pleased to find himself, his wife, and their dog Teddy included in the painting. He often walked past the shelter while Gill was working and watched the progress each day. He said it was lovely to be featured in the design. The chair of the parish council, Martin Worth, described the artwork as amazing and said the community’s reaction has been very positive.

About 30 miles away, another bus stop has also received a creative makeover. This one celebrates the 60th anniversary of the first spacecraft landing on the moon in 1966. Artist Sarah Worne painted a large harvest moon and a green bus driving around it, inspired by the phrase 'one small stop. ' She said she didn’t have a detailed plan and used the paint colors she had available, mostly blues. The new bus stop designs in Cornwall have brought joy to local residents and made waiting for the bus a more enjoyable experience. These artistic projects show how creativity can bring communities together and turn everyday places into something special.
