MVV Energie, a German energy company, is constructing some of the largest and most powerful heat pumps in the world. These massive machines will use water from the River Rhine to help heat thousands of homes in Mannheim. The Mannheim heat pump project is expected to begin next year and should be fully operational by the winter of 2028-29. The system will use filters to make sure fish are not sucked up from the river, and studies show it will only change the river's temperature by less than 0. 1 degrees Celsius. The project will cost about €200 million. Everllence is working on an even bigger heat pump project in Aalborg, Denmark, with a total capacity of 176 megawatts. This system will use four smaller modules and is expected to supply nearly one third of the town's heating needs. Large hot water storage tanks will help make the system more flexible, allowing it to store heat when electricity prices are high. In Finland, Helsinki is updating its district heating system by adding heat pumps, biomass burners, and electric boilers to a network that connects almost 90 percent of the city's buildings. In the UK, new district heating networks are being planned, such as the Exeter Energy Network, which will use air-to-water heat pumps to supply heat to the University of Exeter and other customers. Experts believe that using water from old mines and building heat pumps in rural areas could help expand clean heating options. As more cities look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, large heat pumps are becoming an important part of the solution.
