The Burning Man festival was initiated in 1986 on a beach in San Francisco with a mere 35 participants. Today, the event attracts nearly 70,000 individuals annually. The nine-day festival has evolved into a prominent brand and destination, attracting 'Burners' from across the globe who collaboratively construct a temporary city, complete with art installations, healing camps, motivational speeches, and live DJ performances.

Attendees often invest thousands in tickets, transportation, and supplies for the event, in addition to contributing countless hours of labor. Despite the substantial costs, many argue that the experience is priceless. Tessa Velázquez, a 33-year-old chef based in New York, has attended Burning Man four times, spending between $5,000 and $7,000 per trip. She asserts that the festival fulfilled her expectations of inspiration and self-discovery, but she has not returned since 2022 due to concerns about the event's alignment with her values.

Prem Kumta, a 47-year-old CEO of a creative agency in San Francisco, is another Burning Man attendee. As part of a large camp with an extensive setup, his expenses are somewhat higher, amounting to approximately $8,000 for a week at the festival. Despite the high costs, Kumta maintains that the unique experience offered by Burning Man is worth the investment.

Fiona Hillery, a 33-year-old Los Angeles resident, attended Burning Man for the first time this year, spending $1,500 on the trip. She asserts that the experience, which bolstered her faith in humanity and boosted her confidence, was well worth the expenditure.
