Talks between the United States and the United Kingdom about a major technology agreement have come to a standstill. Both countries promised to work together on advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, or AI. However, negotiations have been delayed because the US is concerned about what it sees as trade barriers set by the UK. These barriers make it harder for American companies to do business in Britain, and the US wants to see changes before moving forward.

A spokesperson for the UK government said that the special relationship between the two countries is still strong. The UK is committed to making sure the Tech Prosperity Deal creates opportunities for hardworking people in both nations. According to The New York Times, there are bigger disagreements between the US and UK, including issues with digital regulations and food safety rules. When the deal was first revealed, the UK government highlighted the benefits it would bring. However, the MOU also states that these proposals are not binding and will only take effect if progress is made on a wider US-UK Economic Prosperity Deal, which was signed in May.

President Trump's administration has tried to change global trade rules, putting tariffs on many countries, including allies like the UK, and seeking new deals that are more favorable to the US. For the UK, this has meant negotiating over different parts of its economy, resulting in some agreements but also delays, such as the proposed deal to remove tariffs on UK steel exports to the US, which is now on hold.

Allie Renison, director at SEC Newgate UK and a former government trade adviser, said the current situation shows that the US and UK are taking a 'piecemeal approach' to trade deals. Instead of finalizing everything at once, different areas are being linked to separate parts of the negotiations. She noted that concerns about other trade areas may now be affecting the tech agreement. While there are questions about what these roadblocks mean for US tech companies' investments in the UK, Renison believes it is mostly 'a bit of posturing in the wider negotiations. '
