When Dr Mowla first encountered the Firefly Sparkle galaxy, she was struck by the vivid and diverse colors of the star clusters. To her astonishment, she discovered that it is located more than 13 billion light years away. This means that the light from the Firefly Sparkle galaxy has taken over 13 billion years to reach us. Its small size and great distance would have made it invisible to the James Webb Space Telescope without a fortunate cosmic event. A cluster of galaxies positioned between the Firefly Sparkle galaxy and the telescope distorted the light, allowing scientists to observe it more clearly. This phenomenon is known as gravitational lensing. Dr Kartheik Iyer, a co-leader of the research team from Columbia University in New York, explained, 'It takes the light coming from the firefly and bends it and amplifies it so we can see it in glorious detail. ' This discovery enables scientists to witness the formation of the first galaxies similar to our Milky Way. Dr Iyer expressed the sentiment, 'When it does all this and we are able to see this incredible faraway galaxy, it is a very humbling, magical feeling.
