UK Towns Compete for Culture Crown and £3M Prize in Historic Contest!

The United Kingdom has launched its first-ever Town of Culture competition, giving thousands of towns across the country a chance to win a prestigious new title. This contest is designed to boost local pride and encourage towns to celebrate what makes them unique. The Town of Culture competition will run alongside the well-known City of Culture contest, which was most recently won by Bradford in 2025. An expert panel will select three finalists, and the winning town will receive a three million pound prize, while the two runners-up will each get two hundred and fifty thousand pounds.

The government says the competition is part of a larger effort to 'restore pride in communities. ' Towns are encouraged to apply by sharing their unique stories and showcasing their local culture. Applications are open now, and the strongest candidates will be shortlisted. Each shortlisted town will receive sixty thousand pounds to help with their final bid. The first Town of Culture will be announced in early 2027, and the winning town will host a year-long program of cultural celebrations in 2028.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy explained that great culture is not just found in big cities but is rooted in communities all over the country. She mentioned her own town of Wigan, which is proud of its cultural contributions, from brass bands to Northern Soul music. The panel choosing the winner is chaired by Sir Phil Redmond, a well-known television producer. He wants towns to tell their stories with passion and authenticity. Towns like Longton, Ledbury, and Grimsby are already preparing their entries, highlighting their history, creativity, and community spirit.

The competition is open to all towns in the UK except those in Greater London. To make sure towns of all sizes are represented, the three finalists will include one small town, one medium town, and one large town. The government hopes the competition will have a big impact, similar to what happened in cities that won the City of Culture title. For example, Bradford saw millions of visitors and thousands of events during its year as City of Culture, which made people feel prouder of their city. The Town of Culture contest is part of a broader government plan to invest in towns and help them thrive, aiming to restore pride in every part of Britain.
