From Dudley to Down Under: The Epic Journey of a Library Book

A library book from Dudley, a town in the West Midlands of England, has made an incredible journey across the world. The book, titled The Hive and written by Gill Hornby, was borrowed from a local library in Dudley. Instead of being returned to its original library, the book was handed in at Bairnsdale Library, which is located in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. This library is about 10,500 miles away from Dudley, making the book’s return a real mystery. The staff at Bairnsdale Library, including Joanne, were amazed when they realized where the book had come from. Joanne, who works as a mobile library driver, was photographed holding the blue book behind the library desk, looking both surprised and amused.

The Hive was still within its return deadline when it arrived in Australia, but no one knows exactly how it got there. Jessica Berry, a librarian at Bairnsdale, was the one who received the book. She decided to contact the team at Dudley Libraries in the UK to let them know about the book’s unexpected journey. James Windsor, an assistant at Dudley Libraries, said that it’s always interesting to see where their books end up, but this one was especially surprising because it was literally on the other side of the world. He explained that the book originally belonged to Gornal Library, and now the staff have been sharing the story with their regular visitors, who find it very entertaining.

The Hive, first published in 2013, tells the story of a group of mothers at a primary school and explores themes of group politics and female friendship. Stephanie Rhoden, a manager at Dudley Libraries, said that the book was returned on time, just not to the right library. She described it as a very good read and explained that the library has now withdrawn the book from their collection so it can stay in Australia. Stephanie also mentioned that East Gippsland, where Bairnsdale Library is located, looks like an amazing place. The story of the traveling book has brought smiles to many people and shows how books can connect people from different parts of the world in unexpected ways.
