Mystery Virus Strikes: 72 Tigers Lost at Thailand's Tiger Kingdom

In Chiang Mai, a city in northern Thailand, authorities are investigating the deaths of seventy-two tigers at a popular tourist attraction called Tiger Kingdom. This park is well-known because visitors can get close to tigers, touch them, and even take photos with them. The deaths happened very quickly, in less than two weeks, and affected two different Tiger Kingdom facilities in the city. The local livestock department reported that tests showed the tigers had canine distemper virus, a disease that usually affects dogs but can also infect big cats like tigers.

Canine distemper is a highly contagious virus that attacks the animal's breathing, stomach, and nervous systems. The officials said they are not sure how the virus got into the park, but they have stopped the spread and no more tigers are dying. All the tigers that died have been buried, and the sickest tigers were put to sleep to stop their suffering. There were more than 240 tigers living in the two parks before the outbreak. Besides the virus, tests also found a bacteria that can cause breathing problems in animals. Some officials think the tigers might have gotten sick from eating raw chicken that was contaminated. In the past, a similar problem happened at another tiger zoo in Thailand, where many tigers died after eating bad chicken.

The workers at Tiger Kingdom are being watched by doctors for three weeks to make sure they do not get sick, but so far, no people have caught the virus. Animal rights groups say this tragedy shows how dangerous it can be to keep wild animals in parks for entertainment. They believe that if tourists stopped visiting these places, fewer animals would get sick or die. Tiger Kingdom is now closed for two weeks while workers clean and disinfect everything.
