Hong Kong hiker, 67, dies after falling down stairs on her way to admire red foliage in Tai Lam Country Park
A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when a 67-year-old woman, an avid hiker, met with a fatal accident. She was ascending a staircase to admire the stunning red foliage in a Hong Kong country park when she fell. Her companion promptly alerted the police at 12. 30pm. The woman had pre-existing health conditions, which the police believe may have contributed to her fall.
The incident took place in Tai Lam Country Park, located in the New Territories. The park is renowned for its sweet gum trees, particularly in the Tai Tong section. These trees are a major attraction due to their leaves turning a vibrant red. A photograph of these trees was captured by Sam Tsang.
Upon receiving the distress call, the police arrived at the scene and transported the woman to Pok Oi Hospital in Yuen Long. Despite the medical team's best efforts, she was pronounced dead at approximately 1. 30pm. An autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the cause of her death. The park is a favoured destination for hikers during the winter months, who brave the chilly weather to marvel at the red leaves. The leaves undergo a colour transformation between November and January, before they eventually fall off. A Post reporter observed nearly 1,000 hikers traversing the section within a span of two hours on Christmas Day.
