Pedal Power Ignites: Tour de France Gears Up for Cumbria Debut!
The Tour de France, one of the most famous cycling races in the world, will be coming to Cumbria for the first time in 2027. To celebrate and prepare for this exciting event, a free cycling event will be held in Cumbria. This event will allow local cyclists and visitors to ride on some of the same roads that the professional Tour de France riders will use. The first stage of the men's race will finish in Carlisle on July 2, and the second stage will start in Keswick and pass through Windermere on July 3. This marks the first time the Tour de France has ever come to this part of England.
The Keswick Tourism Association is organizing a warm-up event on July 3, following part of the proposed 2027 route. Jon Redding, a co-organizer from Ultimate Cycling Adventures, said that there will be many more cycling activities leading up to the big race next year. He believes it is fantastic to give visitors the chance to ride the same roads as famous cyclists like Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. The event is designed to build excitement and support for the Tour de France's arrival in Cumbria.
There are three different routes for the warm-up ride, so people of all abilities can take part. The hardest route is 45 kilometers long and follows the Tour de France route from Keswick to Grasmere, returning via Thirlmere and St John's in the Vale to Fitz Park. The intermediate route is 35 kilometers long and goes from Keswick to the end of Thirlmere Reservoir, then back to Fitz Park. For families and those who want a more relaxed ride, there is a 17-kilometer route from Keswick to Legburthwaite and back. All the rides start in Keswick and travel through the beautiful Lake District scenery.
Jon Redding said that the Lake District is usually known for mountain biking, but having the Tour de France come here will make road cycling much more popular. Jack Beament, the manager of the Keswick Tourism Association, said the event is a great opportunity to learn, involve the community, and get ready for the Tour de France. He called the Tour de France coming to Cumbria a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will put the area's landscapes, communities, and businesses in front of a global audience. The organizers are looking for volunteers to help with the event, and people who want to join the ride need to register online. Everyone is looking forward to this exciting time for cycling in Cumbria.
