'World-first' AI camera targets drink-drivers

In a groundbreaking initiative, a new type of camera designed to catch drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs is being tested in Devon and Cornwall. This innovative device, known as the Heads-Up machine, is the first of its kind in the world. The camera is mounted on a tall metal structure that extends over the road, allowing it to monitor vehicles as they pass by. If the camera detects behavior that suggests a driver may be impaired, police officers stationed further down the road can stop the vehicle and conduct a roadside test for alcohol or illegal substances. This technology is crucial because statistics show that drivers who are impaired by alcohol are six times more likely to be involved in fatal accidents. Geoff Collins, the UK general manager of Acusensus, the company behind this technology, expressed excitement about the trial, stating, 'We are delighted to be conducting the world's first trials of this technology right here in Devon and Cornwall. ' One of the key features of the Heads-Up camera is its ability to be relocated quickly to different roads, meaning that drivers will not be aware of when they are being monitored. This element of surprise is intended to enhance road safety by identifying impaired drivers before they can cause harm. The police have previously utilized similar cameras to catch individuals using mobile phones while driving or not wearing seatbelts. With the alarming rate of drink-driving incidents leading to serious accidents, the police are hopeful that the Heads-Up system will contribute to saving lives. Superintendent Simon Jenkinson, who oversees the policing of 14,000 miles of roads in the two counties, emphasized the importance of this technology in their efforts to improve road safety.
