London's Busking Beat Fades as Christmas Market Takes Center Stage

Busking, which means performing music or other acts in public spaces for tips, has long been a part of London’s lively culture. However, musicians are now warning that busking in central London is slowly disappearing. One of the main reasons is that popular busking spots are being taken over by other events, like the Christmas market in Trafalgar Square. Right now, the only official place for buskers in Trafalgar Square is closed because the market is set up there.

Serena Kaos, a musician who used to perform full-time, says she had to stop because she lost access to her regular busking locations. She believes this is a big loss for London’s culture and for future musicians, especially those from working-class backgrounds who might not have other ways to start their careers. Busking has always been a way for new artists to practice and share their music with the public. Without these opportunities, it becomes much harder for musicians to grow and for London to keep its reputation as a city full of street performers.

The Musicians’ Union, which supports performers, has been asking the city to let buskers perform alongside markets and other events. Simeon Scheuber-Rush, the union’s London officer, said that the Christmas market did not include space for buskers, leaving no good places for musicians who use amplifiers. In Leicester Square, another famous spot, a court decided that amplified busking was too noisy and compared it to psychological torture. This decision upset both performers and the public, who miss the live music. The city council says they want to support buskers but also need to balance the needs of visitors and businesses. They promise to keep looking for ways to help street performers, but for now, many musicians are left without places to play. The Trafalgar Square busking spot is expected to reopen in January, but there is no clear plan for Leicester Square.
