AI Satellites Sniff Out Sneaky Water Leaks Faster Than Ever!
Thames Water, a major water company in the UK, is now using advanced technology to help find and stop leaks in its water system. The company is working with Origin Tech, a business that uses artificial intelligence and satellites to spot leaks that are hidden underground. These satellites fly over Swindon and the surrounding areas about every six days. They use special sensors to detect moisture and movement in the ground, which can show where water is leaking from pipes. The information is then turned into a map with points that show where leaks are likely happening. This helps Thames Water workers know exactly where to look, instead of searching everywhere.
According to the Environment Agency, about 19 percent of water in the UK is lost because of leaks before it even reaches customers. That means almost one fifth of all the water that is cleaned and sent through pipes never makes it to people’s homes. John Marsden, the co-founder of Origin Tech, explained that their technology is at least five times faster at finding leaks than a person working alone. In the past, workers had to walk around and listen for leaks or look for wet spots, which could take a long time. Now, with the help of AI and satellites, they can find leaks much more quickly and accurately.
During a trial period, the technology helped Thames Water find 800 leaks in its network. This saved about 8. 7 million litres of water every day, which is enough to fill more than three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Some of the leaks were so large that they were losing more than 10 litres of water every second. That’s enough water to fill a bathtub every eight seconds. Shane Gloster, who is in charge of finding leaks at Thames Water, said that many leaks are never seen by customers because they are underground and hard to find. By using Origin Tech’s satellite data, the company can work more efficiently and reduce the amount of water that is wasted. Thames Water and Origin Tech will continue working together for at least 13 months to see how much more water they can save. This new technology could make a big difference in protecting water supplies and helping the environment.
