Teen Dancer's Dream Revived by Breakthrough Bowel Disease Drug Trial

Georgia Banks, an 18-year-old dancer from Maltby in Rotherham, has always loved dancing. She began dancing at the age of two and hoped to have a career on stage. However, her dreams were threatened in 2020 when she became seriously ill after a family holiday. Georgia started experiencing severe tiredness, frequent trips to the bathroom, and stomach pain. These symptoms made it difficult for her to keep up with her dance training, forcing her to reduce her practice from five times a week to just twice.

After months of medical tests at Sheffield Children's hospital, Georgia was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, specifically ulcerative colitis. This condition causes the colon and rectum to become inflamed, leading to symptoms like exhaustion and abdominal pain. Georgia tried several treatments, including intravenous drugs, but none provided lasting relief. She faced tough choices, such as trying a new medication that required self-injection or undergoing surgery to remove part of her bowel and use a colostomy bag.

Fortunately, Georgia was offered a place in a clinical trial for patients with moderate to severe symptoms. The trial allowed her to take a new medication in tablet form, which meant fewer hospital visits. Within a week of starting the trial, Georgia noticed a significant improvement in her health. She now feels almost completely recovered and has been able to accept a spot to study dance at Wakefield College. Georgia is excited about her future and hopes to perform in West End shows or on cruise ships. The clinical trial she participated in is one of over 300 research studies at Sheffield Children's hospital, and doctors there are proud to help patients like Georgia find better treatments and pursue their dreams.
