'I left the navy to pursue a music career'
Munreece 'Munny' Singh Sahota spent nine years serving as a submariner in the Royal Navy, living and working in a small, dark space deep underwater. Despite the challenging environment, Munny found a way to stay positive and creative by making music. He used his laptop and headphones to produce songs while he was surrounded by four walls and darkness. Munny, who is 27 years old and from Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, is now preparing to release his first EP, a collection of deep house tracks, in October. Remarkably, he produced the entire EP while he was still working underwater in the submarine.
Munny draws inspiration from well-known electronic dance music artists like Avicii, Alesso, and Martin Garrix. Over the past few years, he has worked hard to develop his own unique sound. Coming from a South Asian background, many people expected him to create Punjabi music, which is popular in his community. Munny tried making Punjabi music but realized it was not the right fit for him. He said, 'Everyone assumed when I started building my brand that I would go into Punjabi music. I tried it and found it wasn't for me. ' Instead, he decided to stick with deep house and EDM, and now his music is gaining recognition. Munny is open to working with Punjabi artists in the future, possibly blending their vocals with his style to create a new genre.
After leaving the navy to focus on music full-time, Munny found that the discipline he learned in the military helped him in his creative process. While working on submarines, he did not have access to the internet, so he relied on his surroundings to inspire his music. He aimed to create tracks that were textured, ambient, and full of emotion. Munny said, 'Having that discipline of that crazy environment before has made it easier for me to make music now, especially when you have access to the internet as well. ' Now signed to Run Town Records, Munny's beats are played in trendy rooftop bars like Nobu in Marrakesh. His EP will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music starting 3 October. Munny's journey from the navy to the music industry shows that it's possible to follow your dreams, even if your path starts in an unexpected place. He hopes to continue making innovative music and collaborating with other artists. The BBC encourages people in Warwickshire to share stories they think should be covered, and Munny's story is a great example of pursuing your passion and overcoming challenges.
