AI Hits the Right Note: Musician Sings Again After MND Diagnosis

Patrick Darling, a musician from Bristol, has always loved music. Since he was 14, he has been singing and playing many different instruments. He was the lead singer in an Irish folk group called The Ceili House Band. Patrick taught himself to play the bass guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, melodica, mandolin, and tenor banjo. Music was a huge part of his life, and performing live was his favorite thing to do. However, when Patrick was 29, he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, or MND. This is a serious illness that affects the brain and spinal cord, making it hard for people to move, speak, eat, or even breathe. Losing his ability to sing and play instruments was very hard for Patrick. He said it was deeply sad and took away his biggest passion.

Even though he could not sing anymore, Patrick did not give up on music. He found hope in technology. A company called ElevenLabs created a special computer program that uses artificial intelligence, or AI. AI is a kind of technology that lets computers learn and do things that usually need human thinking. Patrick used this program to help him get his singing voice back. He gave the program old recordings of his singing. The AI listened to these recordings and learned how Patrick’s voice sounded. Then, it created a digital copy of his voice. Patrick said the new AI voice sounded just like him.

With his new AI voice, Patrick was able to perform again. He wrote a new song called Ghost Of A Man I Never Met and performed it with his old bandmates, Nick Cocking and Hari Ma. His family was in the audience, and it was the first time they had heard him sing since his illness. Patrick said that having his voice back gave him hope and made him feel supported. He said it is hard to understand how much it means unless you have been through it yourself. Richard Cave, a speech therapist, helped Patrick create his AI voice. He said it was an honor to help Patrick sing again. Patrick’s story shows how technology can change lives and help people keep doing what they love, even when they face big challenges.
