The Moon is a fascinating destination for humans, and Nasa is planning to send astronauts back there in the next two years. But have you ever thought about what astronauts will eat during their mission? Dr. Sonja Brungs, who is involved in astronaut operations, emphasizes the importance of good and varied food tailored to the needs of individual astronauts. Currently, astronauts consume specially prepared meals that are freeze-dried, dehydrated, or thermostabilised. They have to add water to heat or cool the meals before consuming them. However, there are restrictions on certain foods in space. For instance, bread is not allowed as the crumbs can float in the low-gravity environment, posing a risk to the astronauts and equipment. Additionally, salt and alcohol are limited due to the body's different sodium storage in space and their impact on the waste water recycling system in the International Space Station (ISS).
