Biker mum who stopped thief 'let down' by police
A 31-year-old woman named Xristina used her taekwondo skills to stop a thief from stealing her motorbike, but she felt 'let down' by the police. The incident took place at Hatters Way retail park in Luton. Xristina managed to wrestle the thief to the ground and hold him for 10 minutes before letting him go after he claimed to be a 12-year-old boy. A police car had passed by earlier but only returned after the thief had escaped. Bedfordshire Police stated that they were investigating the incident.
On a regular working day, Xristina had gone to buy a drink from Chaiiwala. Suddenly, two mopeds with three passengers pulled up, and one of them grabbed her motorbike. Feeling attacked, Xristina used her martial arts training to protect herself and her bike. CCTV footage showed her sprinting out of the cafe and pulling the thief from the moving bike. The other two mopeds swerved around her and drove away.
One of the other riders kicked Xristina, and she later thought about what could have happened if they had a knife. She put the thief in a headlock and wrestled him to the ground with help from a bystander. The thief claimed to be forced into the robbery and said he was only 12 years old, although he looked older. Xristina felt bad and let him go. She was frustrated that the police did not help her when she needed them most. Her bike, which was fairly new, suffered about £2,000 worth of damage. Bedfordshire Police said they were investigating and had arrested five people in connection with similar crimes.
Xristina said she was proud of her actions and credited her taekwondo training since the age of seven. She believed the thieves thought she would be an easy target because she was a woman. She felt that the incident happened at the perfect time and to the perfect person, as she was able to defend herself and her property. Bedfordshire Police mentioned that they had recently conducted proactive and intelligence-led operations to target those involved in motor vehicle thefts.
