Legendary Sir Stanley Matthews Gets Vibrant Mural at Bloomfield Road!

Blackpool Football Club has unveiled a striking new mural of Sir Stanley Matthews at Bloomfield Road, celebrating one of the sport's most legendary figures. The mural, painted by Rob Purdon, the club's newly appointed artist in residence, features Sir Stanley in a bright tangerine shirt against a white background. This artwork is Purdon's first major project since joining the club last month, and it now decorates a concourse wall in the Matthews Stand, which is named after the football legend. The unveiling took place before Blackpool's early kick-off against Reading in their League One match, with the club describing the mural as a 'vibrant tribute to one of football's most iconic figures. '

Rob Purdon has ambitious plans for more murals at the stadium. He intends to create another mural honoring Stan Mortensen, who was Sir Stanley's teammate, and one for Jimmy Armfield, a former England right back who captained both club and country and later became a football summariser for BBC 5 Live. Sir Stanley Matthews was one of football's first global superstars, and the mural even includes a tribute from Brazilian legend Pele, written in tangerine letters. Purdon shared with Tangerine TV that he wanted the mural to make a strong impression as the first thing fans see when entering the stand. Having been a supporter for years, he always dreamed of adding something meaningful to the stadium walls.

Sir Stanley Matthews had an extraordinary career, playing nearly 700 games for Stoke City and Blackpool and earning 54 caps for England. He was the first player to win the Ballon d'Or, awarded to Europe's best footballer, in 1956, and he received the honor again in 1963. Matthews is best remembered for his crucial role in Blackpool's dramatic 4-3 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the 1953 FA Cup Final, a match now known as 'the Matthews final,' even though Stan Mortensen scored a hat trick. Matthews retired from professional football in 1965 at the age of 50 and passed away in 2000 at 85. The club hopes that the mural will not only honor his legacy but also inspire future generations of players and fans.
