Visitors flock to Hong Kong’s revamped Temple Street night market for debut, with crowds unseen in years enjoying local treats
On its inaugural night, the newly revamped Temple Street night market in Hong Kong was bustling with hundreds of visitors. The crowd, unseen in years, was there to enjoy a variety of local delicacies at this Jordan attraction. The market, which extends from Jordan Road to Yau Ma Tei's Tin Hau Temple Complex, boasts 32 food stalls. Ten of these stalls offer popular local dishes such as dim sum, beef offal stew, fish balls, imitation shark's fin soup, and 'fried three stuffed treasures', a vibrant vegetable snack filled with fish paste.
May Cheng, a vendor who sells fish balls, siu mai, and beef offal stew, reported being busy since her stall opened at 5pm. She was constantly serving customers for an hour without a break. Her beef offal stew was sold out within two hours. She charges HK$50 for a serving of stew and HK$40 for 20 fish balls or 20 pieces of siu mai. Once her items are sold out, she wraps up for the day.
A stall offering 'fried three stuffed treasures' had about a dozen people queued up. For HK$15, customers could choose three pieces, including options like green pepper and tofu. Yeung Wing-yan, a 42-year-old housewife, visited the market with her six-year-old son. They ended up purchasing 12 pieces and a HK$30 bowl of imitation shark's fin soup. She was unaware of the night market's opening until they happened to pass by. Although she rarely allows her son to consume greasy food, she saw this as an opportunity for him to experience authentic Hong Kong cuisine.
