Microsoft to show off Copilot AI key for Windows keyboards at CES, in first change to layout since 1994

Microsoft, the renowned tech giant, is introducing a new feature to the Windows keyboard - a button to activate its AI Copilot service. This marks the first modification to the keyboard layout since the addition of the Windows/Start key in 1994, highlighting Microsoft's dedication to artificial intelligence (AI). The Copilot key will be positioned to the right of the space bar, with the first devices equipped with this new key available this month.

The Copilot key serves as a shortcut to activate the AI Copilot service, which assists users in creating images, drafting emails, and summarizing text. Over time, this key will become a standard feature on all Windows keyboards. Microsoft's consumer chief marketing officer, Yusuf Mehdi, stated in a blog post that AI will be integrated into every aspect of Windows, from the system to the hardware.

Microsoft envisions 2024 as 'the year of the AI PC', reflecting the emerging trend among smartphone manufacturers to market their latest models as 'AI phones'. While these labels may not hold significant value on their own, Microsoft has spent the past year revamping its major products with AI technology capable of generating new content from large data sets. However, Microsoft's foray into AI services has not yet resulted in a sales boost, as the innovative Copilot features are being introduced to both new and existing devices. As Microsoft continues to enhance its AI offerings, consumers may feel more compelled to upgrade their devices.
