UK's New Women in Tech Taskforce Aims to Smash Barriers and Lead Change

The UK government has announced the launch of a new taskforce aimed at helping women enter, stay, and lead in the technology sector. Technology secretary Liz Kendall is heading the initiative, which brings together some of the most influential women in UK tech, such as Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon, BT Group CEO Allison Kirkby, and Dr Hayaatun Sillem. The taskforce will advise the government on how to improve diversity and encourage economic growth in the tech industry. According to the Chartered Institute for IT, only 22 percent of people working in IT specialist roles in the UK are women, showing a significant gender gap. Liz Kendall said the Women in Tech group would work to break down the barriers that prevent women from advancing in the field. She believes that when women are included in tech teams and decision-making, the sector can create products and solutions that better serve everyone.

Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon, who is known for her achievements in STEM and for founding Stemettes, has been appointed as the Women in Tech Envoy. She passed her A-level computing exam at age 11 and earned a Master's Degree in Maths and Computer Science from Oxford University at age 20. Dr Imafidon has spent over a decade encouraging young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths. She told the BBC that her new role builds on her long-standing efforts to promote equality and representation for women in tech. She said that with technology changing so quickly, now is a crucial time to make sure women are involved in shaping the future. Dr Imafidon emphasized that the goal is not just to have women building technology, but to create technology that benefits everyone.

The taskforce includes 15 founding members, such as Allison Kirkby from BT Group, Francesca Carlesi from Revolut, and Dr Hayaatun Sillem from the Royal Academy of Engineering. Other members are Kate Bell from the TUC, Emma O'Dwyer from Uber, and Sue Daley from techUK. Sue Daley pointed out that women in tech still face challenges like getting into the industry, moving up to leadership positions, and accessing funding. She said that achieving gender equality is long overdue and is proud to work with other inspiring women to make progress. The government hopes that the taskforce will help make the tech sector more representative and ensure the UK can use the full range of talent, ideas, and innovation needed for economic growth. By supporting women in technology, the UK aims to build a stronger, more inclusive tech industry that benefits everyone.
