Breaking Barriers: The Rise of South Asian Footballers in England

The number of South Asian footballers playing professionally in England has nearly doubled since the Football Association introduced a strategy to increase participation. Five years ago, there were only 16 South Asian men playing at the elite level, but now there are 28. Despite this progress, South Asian players still make up just over 1 percent of all professional footballers in England. This is surprising because interest in football among South Asian communities is high. More than 11 percent of adult men and over 15 percent of adult women from South Asian backgrounds are involved in playing football. Many are also coaching and refereeing at different levels.

So, why are there still so few South Asian players at the top? According to players and coaches, there are several reasons. Some of these include old stereotypes, cultural expectations, and a lack of support and infrastructure. Marva Kreel, a football presenter who played for Tottenham as a child, says that she rarely saw players who looked like her on the pitch. The teams she played with were mostly white, and her friends often struggled to get to training because the facilities were far away and there were not enough coaches or rides for girls. Marva believes that these physical barriers, along with stereotypes about South Asian boys and girls, make it harder for talented players to succeed.

Riz Rehman, who runs a mentoring program for South Asian footballers, remembers being told that he would not make it as a professional because of his diet or because people thought he should focus on education instead of sports. His brother, Zesh, was the first British South Asian to play in the Premier League. Riz wanted to follow in his brother's footsteps but had to stop playing due to injury. Now, he helps other young players by connecting them with mentors and organizing workshops. The program, called the Asian Inclusion Mentoring Scheme, is being studied to see how effective it is. Riz hopes that by giving young players more support, more South Asians will be able to reach the top levels of football.

Mariam Mahmood, who plays for Wrexham, says that having role models is very important. When young people see others like them succeeding, it inspires them to believe they can do it too. Mariam was fortunate to join an inclusive academy, but she thinks that better representation needs to start at the grassroots level. If more South Asian children are encouraged to play football and receive good training, more will be able to sign professional contracts in the future. The Professional Footballers' Association says that progress is being made, but there is still a long way to go, especially for women. With more support and opportunities, the number of South Asian footballers at the top could continue to grow.
