Unmasking the Mystery Artist Behind a Victorian Butler's Portrait

In South Yorkshire, a family is hoping to solve a mystery that has lasted for many years. They want to find out who painted a portrait of their ancestor, William Denton, who worked as a butler at Wentworth Woodhouse in Rotherham. The painting was created in the 1850s and shows William Denton dressed in formal clothes. For a long time, the painting was kept in an attic, and no one knew much about it. The artist who made the painting left a mark on a cork in a wine bottle in the picture, but even with this clue, the family has not been able to discover who the artist was.

Don Rose, who is William Denton's great-great-grandson, explained that they took the painting to Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. The experts there said the painting was not very valuable and was probably made by a visiting artist. However, Don Rose said the painting means a lot to his family because it is a piece of their history. The portrait is now part of a new exhibition at Wentworth Woodhouse called Echoes of the House: Stories in Light and Motion. This exhibition was created by asking people in the local community to share items that could help tell the story of the house, not just about the wealthy families who lived there, but also about the people who worked there, like William Denton.

William Denton was born in 1801 and started working at Wentworth Woodhouse as a boot boy when he was a teenager. He worked his way up to become the butler for the 5th Earl Fitzwilliam. By 1857, he was earning 35 pounds a year, which was a good salary at the time. He died in 1874. Don Rose said that his father inherited the painting from his grandmother, but his mother was frightened by it because she felt like William's eyes followed her around the room. She wanted the painting to be kept in the attic. When Don Rose got the painting, he had it cleaned and framed and hung it on the wall. Sheryl Hadfield, another family member, said they are glad to have the painting, even if they never find out who the artist was. She said she can see a family resemblance in William's face. The exhibition also includes old movie devices and modern art installations and will be open until November 8.
