UK interest rates: Bank of England edges closer to summer cut

The Bank of England is contemplating a potential cut in interest rates. Andrew Bailey, the Bank's chief, stated that they require more evidence of a slowdown in price rises before making a decision. He expressed confidence that things are progressing in the right direction and that inflation is anticipated to decrease significantly in the coming months. This could potentially lead to a reduction in interest rates as early as June. However, Bailey cautioned that a rate cut is not guaranteed and that it's not a certainty. The interest rate set by the Bank has a direct impact on the rates set by High Street banks and money lenders. Presently, the rates are at their highest level in 16 years, resulting in increased borrowing costs for items such as mortgages and loans. Bailey stressed the importance of obtaining more evidence that inflation will remain low before proceeding with rate cuts.
