West Midlands Launches Cool New MedTech Courses to Bridge Skills Gap!

A new set of courses called Higher Technical Qualifications, or HTQs, has been created to help close the skills gap in medical technology jobs in the West Midlands. These courses are designed to prepare people for careers in areas like artificial intelligence-powered health devices, wearable technology, and advanced diagnostic tools. The goal is to make sure local people have the skills that employers are looking for, especially as the demand for workers in medical technology continues to grow. Colleges, private training providers, and universities will offer these new qualifications. The courses were developed through a partnership between the West Midlands Combined Authority, Skills England, Pearson, and several employers in the medical technology sector. According to the Association of British HealthTech Industries, the sector will need an extra 70,000 workers by 2035, plus another 75,000 to replace those who leave their jobs. Currently, more than 14,000 people work in medical technology across the UK, and the West Midlands is home to several innovation hubs, such as the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus, Birmingham Knowledge Quarter, West Midlands Health-Tech Accelerator, and Arden Cross, which is a major development near the HS2 Interchange Station in partnership with the University of Warwick.

The new HTQs are being piloted with funding from the West Midlands Investment Zone. Mayor Richard Parker emphasized the importance of these courses, saying, 'We have the UK's largest MedTech cluster, and even more high-quality jobs are coming to Birmingham Knowledge Quarter. It's essential that we ensure local people can gain the skills they need to work in this sector and have opportunities to get started. ' Phil Smith, chair of Skills England, described medical technology as 'the future. ' He said, 'Filling skills gaps for this fast-growing sector through these new qualifications will be a practical way of supporting the NHS by boosting productivity.
