Bafta Buzz: Who’s Hot for This Year’s Film Awards Showdown?

The Bafta Film Awards are one of the most important events in the movie world, especially for British and Irish talent. This year, actors like Emma Stone, Timothée Chalamet, Jessie Buckley, and Wunmi Mosaku are among those who could be nominated. The Bafta nominations are the last major film award shortlists to be announced this season, following other big events like the Oscars. Many of the films expected to do well at the Baftas, such as Hamnet, Sinners, and One Battle After Another, are also in the running for Oscars, but the Baftas have a special focus on British talent.

One thing that makes the Baftas different from the Oscars is that they have more categories for British films and actors. For example, there are awards for the best British film and the best British debut, as well as the overall best film. British actors and films are expected to do well at the Baftas. Carey Mulligan, Harry Melling, and Robert Aramayo are among those who could be nominated, even if they were not recognized at other awards. Films like I Swear, about a young man with Tourette's in 1980s Scotland, and The Ballad of Wallis Island, about a lottery winner trying to reunite his favorite musical duo, are also in contention. Other British films include Pillion, H is for Hawk, The Choral, and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. Many actors from these films, such as Cillian Murphy, Emily Watson, and Andrea Riseborough, could also receive nominations.

One film that will not be nominated is KPop Demon Hunters, even though it was a huge hit on Netflix and is a favorite for the Oscars in the animated and original song categories. The reason is that it was released directly on Netflix in the UK without a cinema release, which makes it ineligible for the Baftas. Some Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts, Dwayne Johnson, and George Clooney also missed out on the Bafta longlist this year.

The Bafta Awards are often a good predictor of who will win at the Oscars. Last year, all the actors who won at the Baftas also won at the Academy Awards. In the past 15 years, most Bafta best actor and best actress winners have gone on to win at the Oscars as well. While other awards like the Golden Globes and Critics Choice sometimes choose different winners, the Baftas are seen as a reliable guide to what might happen at the Oscars. This year, everyone is watching to see which films and actors will be nominated and whether the Baftas will once again predict the Oscar winners.
